Over the past few years, one of the ways Samsung has enticed customers to pre-order its new flagship phones is by offering a free storage upgrade. You paid the same as you would for a 256GB model but received the 512GB model for no extra charge.
This may not be the case for the upcoming foldables. A new report claims that no free storage upgrade will be offered for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 pre-orders.
Only a 50% discount may be offered
The free storage upgrade provided real value to customers as Samsung's flagship's don't have microSD cards now. 256GB is barely enough these days, so double the storage without any additional cost was a valuable incentive to have.
It may not be possible for Samsung to continue providing this incentive, largely due to the increase in memory chip costs. Profit margins on devices are under extreme pressure so Samsung has to make cuts where it can while also raising prices overall.
A report out of South Korea claims that instead of offering a free storage upgrade for Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 pre-orders, Samsung will instead offer a 50% discount. So, for example, if the 512GB model costs $100 more than the 256GB, pre-order customers will only pay $50 for the upgrade.
It remains to be seen if this change will be applied across the board or if some markets, particularly the US, will be insulated and Samsung will continue to offer free storage upgrade as before. If I were a betting man, my money would be on the former.
